BC Jr A Expanded Standings- Week 8

Apparently the Langley Thunder did not like being counted out as they put up 19 goals against Victoria on Sunday to surge into third place. For their efforts they get a Tuesday night tussle with the Coquitlam Adanacs and a return engagement on the island with Victoria this week. We will find out a lot about the Thunder's playoff abilities after this week.

A sense of relief must have been felt by Nanaimo on Sunday night as they secured their first official victory (their first win was due to a New West illegal player forfeit) with a pasting of the last-place Burnaby Lakers. The Timbermen are probably deserving of a couple more victories based on the stats but Junior lacrosse can be a merciless business so it was a nice boost for them to pull off a proper win. The season series rubber match between Burnaby and Nanaimo is on July 6th.

ON Jr A Expanded Standings- Week 6

We enter the final quarter of the season and a logjam has suddenly occurred. A strong weekend sweep of the Northmen by the Whitby Warriors has pushed them into second place. With 4 of their final 5 games against teams at .500 or worse, Derek Keenan's charges seem poised to grab a surprising second place spot after their 0-2 start.

The Burlington Chiefs put up 33 goals in a home and home sweep over Peterborough which leaves the Chiefs lurking in fifth spot with games in hand. In between this was a tough 16-6 loss to the Arrows. Count the Chiefs as solidly in the mix for a home floor spot with work to do over their final 8 games (5 of which are against +.500 teams).

Lastly, the trade deadline passed with a whimper as no big names were moved. Instead you saw depth players change hands as everyone tries to position themselves for the playoffs. It will remain to be seen which was the best deal but often its the unsung player that shines in the playoffs more than the stars.

BC Jr. A Expanded Standings- Week 7

A few days late (blame the paying job) for our BC friends but as expected, we are starting to see the separation of New West and Coquitlam from the rest of the league.

Both teams are riding winning streaks of 6 or more with the Salmonbellies defeating Langley, Delta and Victoria over the past week. An impressive week for the Bellies for sure.

With two head-to-head matchups remaining (June 29th in New Westminster and July 5th in Coquitlam) first place is a long way from being decided. That Bellies forfeit vs Nanaimo could be the ultimate decider in the end.

ON Jr. A Expanded Standings- Week 5

Things are slowly taking shape in Ontario as Six Nations and Orangeville start to pull ahead of the large pack chasing them. Brampton, Barrie, Whitby, Burlington and Peterborough all have to find the consistency in their game if they hope to secure the last two home floor spots in the standings.

A word now to the KW Braves, this year's version of the 2012 St. Catharines Athletics. Coming into the season there were high hopes in Braves-land as they hoped to build on a strong 2012 behind the offense of Dhane Smith, Kyle Jackson and Chris Cloutier. Smith has been his usual scoring machine but Cloutier and Jackson have found it hard to maintain their consistency and with little secondary scoring behind these three, the Braves suddenly find themselves as underachievers. Rumours have begun to swirl around the fate of both Smith and goalie Eric McLaren so look for some trade deadline action from the Braves as they focus on retooling their offense for 2014.

BC Jr. A Expanded Standings- Week 5

As the BC juniors hit the halfway point, we have a tight race as 6 points separate the top 6 teams.

However we are starting to notice some trends in the underlying team statistics and would expect Port Coquitlam to not move above 6th place while the Adanacs and Salmonbellies are starting to edge ahead of Langley, Victoria and Delta ever so slightly. Both teams sport a sterling 5-2 record over teams at .500 or better which speaks to the quality of the defense (Coquitlam) and offense (New West).

Is a Coquitlam vs New West final preordained? Certainly not but Langley, Victoria and Delta must make that important leap and beat the winning teams if they want to break ranks and earn some playing time in August.

ON Jr. A Expanded Standings- Week 4

Hands up those of you who had Six Nations dropping 3 games in a row in the middle of the season?

It was that kind of week in Ontario as we saw the Arrows lose to Burlington, Orangeville and Whitby during the week before righting the ship with a relieving home victory over the Warriors on Sunday.
Add that to a Peterborough loss to previously winless Beaches and Burlington following up their big win over Six Nations by tying KW and then getting run over by Brampton and you've got a recipe for volatile standings.
Special mention goes out to the Brampton Excelsiors who have strung together a 5 game winning streak to make up for a slow start and now lurk just behind league leaders Orangeville and Six Nations. All this without Shane MacDonald who has been out all season with a foot injury.
